Why the Cancer Shootout was started
First, the Philly paintball group was started so players would be able to meet other players, make more friends, and play more events. Now, with more than 270 members, everyone near Philadelphia knows us. Second, my partner George Kuney and I started Unitedpaintballers.com. We did this to give our members paintball gear at better prices, better service, and create the ability to sponsor our teams, and other teams, that support the sport the most. We then asked ourselves "What else can we do to bring our fellow paintballers together for a tighter community?"
Now let me introduce to you Harrison Burris. Harrison, one of our more active members, came up with an awesome idea. While still in high school, he sent me an email asking if our group could put together a charity event to raise money for breast cancer research. You see the driving force came from home. Harrison asked if we could help. We put together a last minute event at Captain Carl's paintball field. So we did. We had a great time, Having Greg Hastings raffle off himself for a day was awesome and made for a great event. We raised more than $1400 in just one day.
When I did some research, I realized that my own grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 1954. Back then life was not as easy so they had to do a double mastectomy to remove the cancer. My grandmother was an incredibly strong woman and she never spoke of her cancer with any of her grandchildren, I only found out from my own mother and my aunt about the cancer and what it had done to the entire family after she passed away. My grandmother passed away in May 2004.
So since breast cancer affects both our paintball and personal families, George and I want to battle the disease on the front lines, right where we belong!!
Thank you for your donation and attendance and I hope to see you on the battlefield soon!!
